Megan is an illustrator and writer who thinks the noun form of ‘creative’ is gross and obnoxious. After working as a graphic designer and journalist in communications, and as the features writer for GLAMOUR magazine, she’s gone rogue and is currently pursuing spiritual enlightenment (yes, really!) and trying to get paid for the things she writes and draws.

What inspired you to write your story?

Nostalgia, and longing for my barefoot home in the Eastern Cape. I had been dreaming about swimming in the Indian Ocean all week, about road tripping home, and these words just followed that path of thinking.

What’s your favourite book/story?

Margaret Atwood’s ‘Cat’s Eye‘ shakes me out of my comfort zone every time I read it. The Minpins by Roald Dahl will also always remain a steadfast favourite.

How much of your work reflects your life?

Sometimes writing is like truth serum for me: every feeling, every thought, comes tumbling out without even trying, and in this way there is a lot of myself and my life embedded in my work. Even if a story is far from my own reality, it always seems to capture — if not my mood — then something from my environment; the sun, waves, love, heartache.

If you were to write a book about your life, what would the title be?

Barefoot, A Life Lived.

I’ve got the passenger seat stretched…
